In the Northern towns of England Bonfire night is a Do It Yourself event. As the sun sets over the city streets & estates the Chaos of the night begins as the first of the fire piles are lit and new ones are made. The streets rise into a hive of activity, no one takes charge, no safety event organisers here, just the people and the night, the fire & smoke, the fireworks and gunpowder, far from Disneyland a whole different display takes place, a real place with real people remembering a real event in history. Explosions of light and sound fill the night sky under a mist of smokey orange light, breaking the silence of the cold winters night. The empty streets and spaces unusually filled with people gathering to rebel for one night only, drinking, eating and socialising, these impoverish northern towns the last outpost walking ghosts of the working classes captured in a moment, doing what we have done every 5th November for 400 years, a spec in time in a dynamic and everchanging world, memories of the infamous Gun Powder plot & Guy Fawkes, memories of the British Empire, memories of England, burned in the bonfire and reduced to ash.
