After months of lockdowns, unable to venture further afield in good conscience, under house arrest, under urban arrest, restricted to our doorsteps, the lockdown as life never shared equally. After having a confirmed case of Covid 19 in our household the period as it is for all life is now one of uncertainty compounded in our isolation, locked away indoors working and suffering, working and restricted, in bondage slaves to economics and virus, desolate of our individual freedoms, unable to live. As the virus and its effects took its toll on our bodies and minds, so far we have been lucky and fared better than some, yet the long-term effects are still unknown as life seemingly hangs in the balance. To lift the nations spirits the government announce the easing dates another release of the tap or a permanent release only time will tell. For me forget the pub and the big match still to come, it’s the freedom of movement so sorely missed which is most desired. To see a loved one, to take a drive and leave our surroundings, away from work and the now prison like walls of home, seeking new experiences, connections to the landscape, to nature and with one another seeing the World, experiencing Life, in a new light, to feel alive once again.
The date comes around 29th March 2021 and our freedom to roam, our human rights are returned to us once more there’s only one place I crave for the first journey out a short journey to the border of worlds of land and sea, of sky and earth, the beach at Bridlington Bay and the Holderness coast as it stretches for miles from Flamborough to Spurn Point we drive in the early evening to avoid any crowds armed with layers of coats, walking shoes and a warm flask and picnic of sandwiches, crisps and chocolate biscuits we park at the empty park and ride carpark adjacent to the beach. Leaving the boundaries of the car, the safety fences and the steps down to the beach we are greeted with the welcome site of our spiritual home. The depth of the cold blue North Sea to the distant horizon of blue sky, under foot sand dunes, the sandy beach narrow today due to the spring high tide, the weather seems to know the importance of the day and adds to the experience, spring sunshine still warm as night falls, a gentle warm wind takes the edge of the coldness of the loss of light as the sun sets and we walk along the beach rekindling our Freedom and re charging our souls in every step, the endless view, nature all around us the distant lights of ships on the horizon and towns far away from us.
